21 DEC 2007:COATHAM PROTEST BEATS REDCAR & CLEVELAND IN HIGH COURT!
BY CHRIS McGLADE of FRIENDS OF COATHAM COMMON
At about 4pm today we received the news from our legal team, that we had won the Judicial review in the High Court and that the planning permission for the Coatham scheme hadbeen quashed. Apparantly, the High court judge had ruled that the planning processhad been biased from the start. This is MASSIVE....

1957-2007: MARTY 'MATEY' POWELL
Marty, former singer of NO WAY Teesside's TOP punk act of the late 70s, died suddenly of an asthma attack on November 24th. Marty and No Way made the classic' Breaking Point' single and supported many big names of the day like The Damned, 999, Undertones and The Skids. I was thrilled, having had the single since I was 14, to meet and film their first reunion in '94, at a tribute night for the late DAVE JOHNS - another big name on the Teesside music scene who died too soon. I got to know Marty, he was always full of beans, as this pic taken just this Summer at his 50th birthday shows. Top bloke. Life and Soul.
26 OCT: COATHAM ON PRISON PLANET USA ! The "Guantanamo feel" to quote Vera Baird MP referring to the Coatham fencelands a feature on the website of Alex Jones, the outspoken Texan talk radio host, documentary maker and crusader against the "New World Order" and the erosion of civil liberties!

21 OCT: PREMIERE BOYCOTTED!!!
Almost 500 people show up for Coatham premiere but Redcar & Cleveland's 59 councillors are ALL conspicuously absent !
This could only be a blanket boycott by the council but they were keen to see it as their press office called me for a copy the very next day. They didn't get one as there will be plenty of opportunities to see it in the near future at public screenings across the borough.
Sun 21st Oct, 7pm: PREMIERE @ Coatham Bowl: Calling all Tax Payers in Redcar & Cleveland and all visitors to Redcar... 'COATHAM: A COMMON CONCERN' The Story of 359 Houses and No Money For Leisure Film and Speakers - Free Admission !

OCT 2007: COATHAM TRAILER
5-min. trailer of a major new 75 min. documentary I have produced with Chris McGlade and The Friends of Coatham Common in Redcar...
The film was made to alert the largely unknowing public to the real facts of this 'leisure scheme' (its really just a housing estate!!) and get it taken back to the drawing board. Thanks to the tireless dedication and high-calibre research of the FOCC, we now have an explosive film that I guarantee will be making waves across Teesside very soon.
Public screenings are now being set up.
Following the full house at Thirsk in July, A CENTURY IN STONE will be doing a tour of towns and villages that surround the Teesside / Cleveland area:

SEPT 2007: VIN SHOOT IN CANADA Vin charms the Canucks in his own inimitable style, courtesy of several dollar stores...(that's pound shops to me and you). Great footage and top times including a visit to a First Nation Pow Wow which was outstanding! Thanks to all who put us up / put up with us, helped us out and to all those who gave us their feedback on camera. Good on yer!!!
SEPT 2007: VIVA LA REPUBLIK !
At the 2003 elections in Redcar & Cleveland, a motley crue aka the Tory / Lib-Dem / Independent Coalition took over the town hall and took us back in 'Yorkshire'...only that we didn't join North Yorkshire and effectively became the isolated 'Island of Yorkshire'. But that was ok because it was all a cynical political ploy to divide Teesside anyway...
In 2007, after being rubbish for 4 years, the coalition were out and Labour were back in. Although Labour have been rubbish so far as well, they have socked it to Coalition Councillor-Cult Leader Abbott and his Yorkshire Fantasists with this one! HAPPY UN-YORKSHIRE DAY TO ALL!
SEPT 2007: COATHAM: A COMMON CONCERN
For 2 months I've been making a short doco with Chris McGlade and 'The Friends of Coatham Common' who are fighting Redcar and Cleveland Council plans to build 359 houses on the entire seafront car park and the last green space in Coatham. I believe the scheme will be detrimental to the enjoyment of not just local residents but the tens of thousands of visitors from all over who will encounter log-jammed roads and lack of parking that may well put them off altogether.
I got involved after hearing about local man Jimmy Willis who started a protest camp on the common after the council erected a 7-feet perimeter fence around the site to keep the public off. With no building work set to go ahead for a multitude of issues to be featured in the film, why are the public being denied a basic freedom enjoyed for hundreds of years? ***PUBLIC PREMIERE OF THIS FILM IN REDCAR TBA SOON !***
SEPT 2007: LONGRIDGE IN VILLAGE GREEN BID
Powerful new film coming soon to kill Mallon, Budd and MBC's feebleargument stone dead.
The campaign to save Longridge Wood in Marton from the bulldozers continues with the group fighting to get Village Green Status as it has been used by the public for over 20 years and is therefore eligible. Please spread the word and get people behind the campaign. They will all moan if it goes, the kids will lose out, nature will be trashed and the roads will be an even bigger nightmare. TUES JULY 17th: "The biggest turn out for the Thirsk festival ever !"
was the verdict of the Ritz staff as crowds packed the 200-seater cinema from the floor to the gods.
To pull in this kind of crowd 3 and a half years on and 25 miles from Teesside was just fantastic. Thanks to all who came and made it a great night !

FEB & MAR 2007: ON TOUR WITH VIN GARBUTT Just returned from shooting Vin Garbutt on tour in Holland, Belgium, Malaysia and Australia. Amazing to see him perform songs and tell stories from Teesside so far from the place. Audiences were spellbound and in hysterics wherever he went. The highlight was Australia's biggest folk festival at Port Fairy where he played to around 5,000 !
Special Thanks to Ralph McTell, Rory Mcleod , Kristina Olsen and all the Vin fans for their comments on camera.
And many thanks to our fine hosts; Margaret and Ian in KL, Jan and Gaz in Briz, Debbie and Kim in Sydney and Andrew and Heather in Victoria. Thanks also to Malcolm Hill for the pic of Vin and me in Sydney.

IN PRODUCTION -
VIN GARBUTT DVD
Vin Garbutt is a Teesside folk legend who has been on a virtual non-stop tour since 1969. To mark his forthcoming 40th year on the road, I am putting together a definitive 'folkumentary' of his life. I have already filmed a couple of local shows and in February will travel with him to Europe, Malaysia and Australia.
The plan is to film him sporadically over the next couple of years and then launch the film in the Spring of 2009 with cinema screenings, DVD release and maybe even...a TV slot !
2007: IN PRODUCTION - TEESSIDENTITY??? .Teesside-Cleveland-Yorkshire-Tees Valley?
Where are we? Who are we?
How did we get here and where are we going? From the cliffs of Boulby, across the Cleveland hills and along the banks of the Tees, I am on a mission to find out. A big production - part historical, part political, part tragi-comedy.... Fundraising and research has begun and the whole project will hopefully take me 12 months ( and not 15 years this time) with a big launch in Spring 2008.
JAN 2007: ROAD SIGN or PIG'S EAR?!!
And don't forget... PART OF THE HISTORIC COUNTY BOROUGH OF TEESSIDE (1968-1974) and PART OF THE HISTORIC COUNTY OF CLEVELAND (1974-1996)
...Too daft to laugh at !!!
FEB 2007: ACIS MUSICNOW ON MYSPACE
The MYSPACE boom is another way to get the word out. I have put up some tracks from the 'ACIS' score as the CD I was going to put out didn't happen due to being too busy with the new film projects.

JAN 2007: MIMAIGNORES MIDDLESBROUGH ARTISTS
MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art) opens at last to a big fanfare in the local media and a luke warm review on Channel 4 news...
As I predicted in my Gazette column of May 2005, MIMA's curators missed the opportunity to herald our homegrown acclaimed and emerging talent in a big way and chose to play catch up bigging up the Picassos, Hirsts and Bacons etc. like galleries in every other city or town. The promotion of local art and local artists is crucial to MIMA making any cultural impact on Teesside. If it doesn't grasp this quick it will become a bourgeouis £19m white elephant and the masses won't give a toss...
JAN 2007:ESTON HILLS THE NEW ROSWELL?
Normanby schoolteacher David Jowsey may spark another mad rush to Eston with 'Dragons in the Sky' - his debutchildren's sci-fi novel set in the Cleveland hills...and under them. Good stuff !
