Happy Birthday Mr. Bolckow ! love from modern Middlesbrough XXX
8th DEC 2006: REMEMBERED YET RUINED...
The 200th birthday of Henry Bolckow, Middlesbrough's first ironmaster, first Mayor and first MP was commemorated by the current Mayor Ray Mallon and MP Ashok Kumar. Mr. Mallon unveiled a clock in Captain Cook Square while a short distance away 'The North Riding Infirmary' Middlesbrough's first hospital and Henry Bolckow's gift to the town in 1864 was being demolished for an Aldi supermarket.
Mr. Kumar unveiled a plaque marking the site of Bolckow's grand mansion, 'Marton Hall' which was also demolished back in 1960 following years of neglect. A short distance from there, Mr.
Bolckow and Mr. Vaughan laid side by side in ruined graves.
There are also two Bolckow exhibitions worth seeing at Dorman Museum and the Capt. Cook Birthplace Museum; and as far as i know there are no plans to demolish either of these buildings.
